Tampa's Toffee to Go gets swept up in Oprah Effect

RECOMMENDED READING

Back in 2002 when Lisa Schalk started Toffee to Go in Tampa, she told friends, "I will be one of Oprah's Favorite Things." Eyebrow wagging all around. Sure, it's delicious toffee, but Oprah? And now it's right there on Page 89 of the December issue of O, the Oprah Magazine, which hit newsstands Wednesday with a gorgeous picture of one of Shalk's toffee "towers." Word is, Oprah's a dark chocolate fan, so it was probably the dark chocolate pecan version that clinched the deal. The Oprah crew deemed it "toffee at its most delectable," Schalk said Web business on Thursday was 15 to 20 times greater than the same time last year. Toffee to Go is at 3251 W Bay to Bay Blvd.; a small 2-pound tower costs $54 and a nearly 4-pound tower is $99.
