There are plenty of good barbecue places in the Tampa Bay area. But this one in Carrollwood stands out. It's far from the hustle and bustle of Dale Mabry, tucked in a tiny shopping center at the corner of Armenia and Linebaugh. But don't let the size of the restaurant fool you.
First thing you'll notice in the window are many first-place trophies from various barbecue contests. Owner Gary Callicoat is a Kansas City Barbecue Society Florida State Champion and has won multiple awards. Inside, the cozy eatery is lined with mini picnic tables with a tall sit-down counter in the center. And it's impeccably clean.
On the menu are sandwiches, platters or even salads with pork, ribs, brisket or chicken. The dry rub perfectly seasons the meat which is cooked to perfect tenderness, but not overdone. These are especially perfect for those of us who like a little more control of how much sauce covers the meat. But not to worry, sauce-lovers; there are several to choose from: Regular, Sweet, Hot to some volcanic concoctions. We liked the flavorful sweet and regular. In addition to the usual side dishes (cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans), check out the old-fashioned corn bread pudding and the grilled corn, both of which were outstanding. The portions are conservative, but each bite is filling.
Finish the meal with some banana pudding topped with whipped cream.
