Eckerd College is a private, coeducational college of liberal arts and sciences offering undergraduate degrees and lifelong learning programs. It is known for its studies in marine science, international studies, creative writing, studies abroad and civic service. Approximately 1,800 undergraduate students live or attend classes on the campus' 188 acres of waterfront property between Boca Ciega Bay and Frenchman's Creek in the south St. Petersburg-Gulfport area. In addition, 1,000 students are enrolled in the Program for Experienced Learners, a bachelor's degree program for adult students. Among its other continuing education programs, is the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College (ASPEC).
Eckerd College is related by covenant with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and was founded as Florida Presbyterian College in 1958. It was renamed for businessman and civic leader Jack M. Eckerd in 1972.
