The Pier is one of St. Petersburg's most prominent landmarks, dating back to 1926, when pledges of $300,000 were raised throughout the community and a $1,000,000 bond issue paid for the Million Dollar Pier to replace the old Municipal Pier. With that, it became the first city-owned pier in St. Petersburg history.

The old Million Dollar Pier building has long been demolished and reconstructed since then, replaced with a now-dated inverted pyramid building. But its prime location on the waterfront still makes it one of the city's top tourist draws.

The current Pier is five stories of shopping, dining and other attractions. It has 16 specialty shops, four sit-down waterfront restaurants, the Dockside Eatery food court, The Pier Aquarium, an observation deck for viewing the stars (and the occasional space shutte launch), and a variety of other outdoor activities. The Pier holds over 300 events annually.

Because of an aging pier approach and dated design, plans are now in motion for the "next generation of The Pier." Until those plans are revealed, this aging icon will continue be a downtown destination.
