5 things to do under $5: Free plane rides for kids, Free Ferry Sunday, Comic Con at the library

1Young Eagles Flight Rally: Kids 8 to 17 can explore the world of aviation and get a free plane ride when volunteer pilots take children on a 15-minute flight. Each young "pilot" gets one-on-one time with actual pilots to learn how airplanes work and how safety comes first. Get there early since slots are first-come, first-served. Weather will be monitored; check eaa282.org for possible cancelation. 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. Clearwater Airpark, 1000 N Hercules Ave., Clearwater. (813) 765-2204.

2Free Ferry Rides: The Cross-Bay Ferry is offering a free "Test the Waters" ride Sunday for the 50-minute trip across Tampa Bay between downtown St. Petersburg and the Tampa Convention Center. The free rides are first-come, firs-served and cannot be reserved in advance. So your best bet to get the time you want is to go to the ticket office when it opens at 7 a.m. because the day's tickets are often sold out by noon. Ticket offices are next to the Tampa Convention Center and the St. Petersburg Museum of History. The ferry runs 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sunday. See crossbayferry.com for departure times. (727) 894-1052.

3Evening Tide Talks: The Florida Aquarium hosts an evening of free refreshments before a presentation called "Saving the Ocean's Tigers." Kathy Heym, director of animal health at the Florida Aquarium, discusses global shark populations and conservation efforts at the Florida Aquarium. Free. 5:45 p.m. March 22. Florida Aquarium, 701 Channelside Drive, Tampa. (813) 273-4000. flaquarium.org.

4Alternative Facts: Teams of local writers will go head to head to determine if short memoir pieces are true or "alternative facts." The $5 admission to the memoir writing game benefits the Poynter Institute. 7-9 p.m. Friday. Sawgrass Gallery and Teahouse, 2436 Emerson Ave. S, St. Petersburg. (727) 945-2907.
