1 MarineQuest and the St. Petersburg Science Festival: The open house at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute has grown into a huge extravaganza of science-related exhibits and activities that spreads from the marine institute along the waterfront to the adjacent University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus. You can find everything from marine animals in a touch tank to crazy chemistry experiments to fighting robots. It's all free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 100 Eighth Ave. SE, St. Petersburg.

2 Beach competitions: Clearwater Beach will be ground zero for outdoor athletics with two big competitions there this weekend: the RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championships and the Big Shot Volleyball Tournament, both taking place around Pier 60. This is the first time the international RS:X windsurfing event has been held in the United States, and more than 100 domestic and international athletes are expected to compete, many of them aiming for the 2016 or 2020 Olympics. For the two-on-two beach volleyball tournament, more than 200 teams from across the East Coast will be competing. Both events run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and both are free for spectators at 10 Pier 60 Drive, Clearwater Beach.

3 Streetcar Fest: You can take the kids on a fun and cheap joyride on Tampa's historic streetcars on Saturday. It's just 25 cents to ride and there are discounts along the streetcar line at shops and restaurants. There will be a DJ and food and other vendors at Dick Greco Plaza (Station No. 10) and a Cupcake Festival at Centennial Park (Station No. 1) as part of Ybor's Saturday Market. The 25-cent rides are being offered from 10 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Centennial Park is at 1800 E Eighth Ave., Tampa.

4 H&R Train Show: This huge weekend for train lovers brings a judged layout competition with exhibits of every scale of model railroading. There will also be model train-related vendors and how-to classes to get you started, along with seminars and demonstrations for the more seasoned train fans. Children's activities also are on tap. It's all free at H&R Trains, 6901 U.S. 19 N, Pinellas Park. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

5 Fall Wildflower Festival: Brooker Creek Preserve will host a wildflower sale Saturday. In addition, there will be a butterfly tent, live honeybee observation, wildflower presentations, a scavenger hunt and a craft area for children. It's all free at the preserve, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. (727) 453-6800.
