5 under $5: Festival of Reading, Florida Orchestra family concerts, Circus McGurkus returns

1. Ian Harvie: The actor who plays Dale on Amazon’s Transparent will give a free talk Tuesday as part of the University Lecture Series at USF’s Marshall Student Center. 2. Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading: The festival’s 25th year brings former Fox News commentator Gretchen Carlson, bestselling crime fiction author Michael Connelly, children’s author Kate DiCamillo (Because of Winn-Dixie) and award-winning science fiction author Jeff VanderMeer among more than 45 authors of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and books for young readers. 3. Morean Surreal Workshop: You can drop in at the Morean Arts Center on Saturday and Nov. 18 to create your own surreal fashion accessory, inspired by the Dalí museum’s current exhibition. How about a beetle and dragonfly brooch? Bejeweled lip and eyeball pins are also among the projects to choose from — inspired by actual Salvador Dalí and House of Schiaparelli designs. 3-8 p.m. Saturday. Florida Orchestra: Family Concerts: A 35-minute performance of the Science of Sound: Horn Quartet introduces children to classical music and activities including the instrument Petting Zoo. 2 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Sunday. Circus McGurkis: This people’s fair grew so big that organizers took a year off, but it’s back this year, sponsored by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) with a focus on locally produced, fair trade goods and services. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
