Top things to do this weekend: La La Land in Concert, Tiny Home Show

CITY OF STARS: La La Land in Concert

What does a multiple-Oscar-winning hit musical do for a second act? Go on tour. With La La Land in Concert, the Mahaffey Theater will have a live symphony orchestra playing the score while the movie starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling plays on a big screen. Damien Chazelle’s valentine to movie musicals has developed a cult following, as evidenced in past tour stops by the sea of yellow dresses in the audience — similar to the one worn by Stone in the film’s posters. The show starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg. $45-$125. (727) 893-7832. themahaffey.com.

SKATEBOARDERS: Tampa Am

Considered the premier amateur event in skateboarding, the Skatepark of Tampa’s annual Tampa Am contest is the place some of the world’s best street skateboarders were first brought into the spotlight. The winner will automatically qualify for the 2018 SLS Nike Pro Open. The event brings a weekend of parties, bowl jams, concrete jams, tricks and plenty of PBR. Friday brings a SPoT Friends Art Show with a collection of art on skateboard decks at 8 p.m. at the Bricks, 1327 E Seventh Ave. in Ybor City. Saturday brings a 25 Year Anniversary Party and a Converse Concrete Jam at SPoT starting at 7 p.m. The Tampa Am, $5-$10 daily or $30 weekend, opens at 9 a.m. Thursday through Sunday’s final. Skatepark of Tampa, 4215 E Columbus Drive, Tampa. (813) 621-6793. skateparkoftampa.com/tampaam.

WINDY: Kite Festival

The sky behind the Thunderbird Beach Resort on Treasure Island will be filled with kites Saturday and Sunday for the Veterans Day Fall Fly. The free, family-oriented event will feature general kite flying, kite games, stunt kite lessons and demos. It runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday on the sand behind 10700 Gulf Blvd., Treasure Island. (727) 320-9463.

SMALL SPACE: Tiny Home Show

The tiny home craze brings images of twee hipsters lounging on foldaway futons with quaint, whimsical, Pinterest appeal. The Tiny Home Show on Saturday at the Hillsborough Community College SouthShore campus in Ruskin aims to show what the Circle Pond Tiny Home Community under way near Sun City Center can deliver. You’ll also be able to tour a tiny firehouse featured on HGTV and Nawaka, the Victorian Tiny Home (tiny homes often have nicknames). There will also be some "skoolies," former school buses that are now homes. Vendors will be on hand to talk about furnishing living spaces of 100 to 400 square feet and there will be talks on sustainability, solar power and becoming debt-free. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. 551 24th St. NE, Ruskin. Admission is $5, free for veterans and students. (813) 892-2990. circlepondtinycommunity.com.
