Black history event to honor medical pioneer
Black History Month Productions will present the fifth annual Black History Month Recognition Banquet at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lorenzo Hamilton Community Center at Kennedy Park, 899 Kennedy Blvd. This year's honoree is Dr. Howard Blount, the county's first black doctor, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. Chili Cook-off features tasty samples, music
The annual Spring Lake Chili Cook-Off will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Spring Lake Community Center, 4184 Spring Lake Highway. The event will feature a bluegrass band and 14 entries of chili, with judges from area restaurants. The winner will take home a trophy. The cost is $4, which includes samples of all chili and drinks. The event is hosted by the Spring Lake Community Association, with proceeds going toward upkeep of the historic stone community center. For information, call (352) 688-2237.

Garden Club offers gift certificates
The Spring Hill Garden Club is selling gift certificates to be used at its plant nursery at 1489 Parker Ave. The minimum purchase is $10, and certificates expire one year after purchase. The nursery is open from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Saturdays. Proceeds from sales support the adjacent Nature Coast Botanical Gardens.
