Broadway stars to headline 'Spring Awakening'

Freefall Theatre was already generating buzz for its upcoming production of Spring Awakening, the 2007 Tony award winner for Best Musical, but casting news puts this show in the must-see column when it opens July 19 in St. Petersburg. The show will star Rachel Potter, from Broadway's Evita and The Addams Family, as Wendla and Chase Peacock, from Broadway's American Idiot, as Melchior. Directed by Freefall artistic director Eric Davis, the ground-breaking rock musical closes out the 2012-13 season at Freefall. The play draws parallels between the youth of the late 19th century and the youth of today as it explores teenage sexuality. It's for mature audiences, and it runs through Aug. 18 at 6099 Central Ave. $37-$44. (727) 498-5205. — Sharon Kennedy Wynne
