Community news: garage sales to gun shows

Scouts seek donated goods: Boy Scout Troop 72 is collecting donated items for its upcoming garage sale. Proceeds from the garage sale will go toward summer camp expenses. To donate, call Scoutmaster Ben Spencer at (813) 479-3585 to coordinate a drop-off or pick-up of the items. The troop is collecting items until 8:30 p.m. Monday. The garage sale will take place during the Zephyrhills Founders Day Parade from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 9 on the porch of ClassB, 38530 Fifth Ave., Zephyrhills.

Shady Hills blood drive: The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 8681 will host a blood drive from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the post, 18940 Drayton St., Shady Hills. Everyone donating will receive a mini wellness checkup, including cholesterol screening, from Florida Blood Services. For information, call (727) 856-1860.

Centennial Masses: St. Rita Catholic Church will celebrate its centennial Masses on Sunday, with an English service at 11 a.m. and a Spanish service at 5 p.m. at the church, 14404 14th St., Dade City. Gun show at fairgrounds: A GunTrader gun show will be held this weekend at the Pasco County Fairgrounds, where private collectors and new gun dealers will offer guns and other items for sale. There will also be airsoft guns, ammunition, knives and military surplus goods available for purchase. The gun show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the fairgrounds, 36722 State Road 52, Dade City. Concealed weapons permit classes will be offered both days at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, free for children 12 and under. For information, go to or call (352) 359-0134

College fair: Wesley Chapel High School will host a college fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the gymnasium at the school, 30651 Wells Road, Wesley Chapel. Representatives from more than 55 colleges and universities (in-state and out-of-state) will be in attendance, as well as representatives answering questions about the military, financial aid, scholarships and Bright Futures.

Painting workshop: Hobby Lobby is offering a new painting workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays at the store, 8615 Little Road, New Port Richey. Seating is limited. Preregistration is required. RV park shows: Tickets are on sale for Southern Charm RV Park and Resort's 2014 Saturday evening shows. The ticket package includes six shows and costs $49. Yoga for back health: Flow Yoga will offer the five-week yoga series Yoga for a Healthy Back, led by chiropractor Jay E. Miller. Hospice volunteering: Gulfside Regional Hospice will host volunteer orientations in March on the following dates:

• 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 11-13 at Gulfside's Community Education Center, 6230 Lafayette St., New Port Richey.

• For patient care volunteers in east and central Pasco: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 20-22 at Gulfside Center for Hospice Care, 5760 Dean Dairy Road, Zephyrhills.

• For Thrift Shoppe volunteers: 9 a.m. to noon March 26 at the Lutz Thrift Shoppe location, 1930 Land O'Lakes Blvd.

• For Thrift Shoppe volunteers: 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 28 at Gulfside's east administrative office, 37826 Sky Ridge Circle, Dade City.

Safe driving classes: AARP is offering Driver Safety Classes for drivers ages 50 and older. A one-day class will be offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 12 at New River Library, 34043 State Road 54, Zephyrhills. A two-day class will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. March 14 and 15 at the Land O'Lakes Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, Land O'Lakes. Cost is $12 for AARP members; $14 for nonmembers. Most insurance companies offer a discount for completing the class. The certificate is valid for three years. Space is limited and registration is required. Pet loss workshop: HPH Hospice offers a free pet loss workshop for adults who are grieving the death of a loved pet. The workshop is 1:30 to 4 p.m. March 20 at the office, 6807 Rowan Road, New Port Richey. The interactive workshop will be facilitated by experienced HPH bereavement counselors who are also animal lovers. Carolyn Hodges, owner of Faith Friends Pet Cremation in Zephyrhills, will share her personal experience with loss. Hospice hosts kids' camp: Gulfside Regional Hospice will have its sixth annual "Rhythm of the Spirit" kids' camp on March 29 and 30 at Lakewood Retreat, 25458 Dan Brown Hill Road, Brooksville. Activities at the camp help the children cope with the death of their loved one. All bereavement services are provided free to Pasco County residents. Registration must be completed by March 15. Poetry contest: In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Progress Energy Art Gallery is hosting its sixth annual poetry contest. Cash prizes and gallery memberships will be awarded. Winners will receive a signed certificate, and winning poems will be published on the gallery's website. The first-place poem will be framed and placed on the Poet's Wall in the gallery alongside prior winners. The entry fee is $3 per poem, or two poems for $5.
