Fundraisers to benefit girl who nearly drowned

Several fundraisers are planned to help with the medical expenses for Savannah Young, who suffers from hypoxia of the brain after nearly drowning in a swimming pool in June 2011, when she was 2 years old. Carwashes have been scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 9 and again on Feb. 23 at B&B Hobbies, 15926 U.S. 19, Hudson. Another fundraiser will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 28 at Chick-fil-A, 13143 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill, where there will be raffles for a helmet signed by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and a football signed by Saints wide receiver Marques Colston. Donations of all amounts are welcome. Donations may also be brought to any Wells Fargo Bank, designated for the "Hope for Savannah" account. Kiwanis to stage prom fashion show

The Kiwanis Club of the Nature Coast will host "A Passion for Fashion" Prom Expo and Fashion Show from 5 to 10 p.m. today at Notre Dame Catholic School, 1095 Commercial Way. Area restaurants will offer tastings from their menus from 5 to 6 p.m., and there will be entertainment by Dennis Baker and Soul Xpres, as well as local talent, throughout the evening. There will be a fashion show of dresses by David's Bridal, Seven McGrath Designs and donated dresses. There will also be prizes given away, and dresses available, some for free and others for purchase. Admission is $5 or trade of a homecoming/prom gown. Call (352) 345-4427 or (352) 686-5183.

Lawn professionals offered training

The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 1653 Blaise Drive, will offer training for green industries best management practices certification from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 12. The workshop will provide training and an opportunity for certification for those working in the lawn, landscape, pest control or municipal grounds maintenance industries. Florida law requires landscape professionals to obtain licenses by 2014. Training is $25 per person, which includes lunch. Class size is limited, and registration is required by Tuesday.
