Go with the Flow Tour in Clearwater

From the They'll Make Anything a Sport Department, comes the 2013 Carbon U.S. National Flow Tour, a professional tour of indoor surfers who will wow the crowds and judges with tricks on an artificial wave and surf simulator inside the Clearwater Surf Style Mega Store. Local flowboarders and bodyboarders can also compete, and there also professionals on this tour who are racking up points as they head to the national finals in New Jersey to compete for a prize purse of more than $27,000. (Wait, professionals? People do this for a living?) The "playing field" is basically a trampoline set at an angle with water flowing about 30 mph uphill. The surfers do the kind of tricks you'd normally see in skateboard competitions, from ollies to flips and spins. Each competitor takes three runs with their top six scores being used to determine cash prizes. The competition runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and is open to boards of all ages and skill levels for a $15-$40 entry fee. It's free for spectators and parking is $2.50 an hour or $15 per day (validation available with purchase) at Surf Style Mega Store, 311 S Gulfview Blvd., Clearwater Beach. Toll-free 1-888-787-3789.
