Hermine winds cancel Summer of Rum Festival

Even though Hermine will have long passed by Saturday, the Summer of Rum Festival that was to be held in Channelside Plaza has been canceled, organizers announced Friday, because stormy weather made setup too treacherous.

"As we arrived this morning to the event site, storm bands from Hurricane Hermine were producing sustained winds at 20-30 mph, with gusts much higher," said Ferdian Jap, partner with Big City Events, the festival organizer. "This kind of wind presents safety concerns for our vendors, crew, staff, and artists to be able to set up in time to open our gates tomorrow.

Tents, the stage, lights and sound equipment couldn't be safely erected, he said, so the festival was called off.

Tickets will be refunded from point of purchase, he said. The company plans to bring the festival back to Tampa next year, the company said.

Eight years ago, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill stood on the sidelines of Raymond James Stadium, waiting for Hill's cue to perform America the Beautiful before Super Bowl XLIII. He held her hand and they kissed as the Steelers, Cardinals and a television audience of 150 million waited in the wings.

  3. From the food editor: Five things I'm enjoying in the food world right now

Sometimes your notebook is scribbled with little thoughts here and there, things you come across in the food world and want to share but aren't sure how or when. Well, folks, I need to get some of this off my chest. Here is a somewhat random collection of culinary things I am really enjoying right now:

Frosty wine coolers and a misty sunset sea breeze. White linen pants and a tilted captain's hat. Coconut milk and an awful lot of rum.

  5. New podcast: Songs for an '80s Halloween playlist

It has to start with Thriller, right? No spooky song playlist from the '80s omits the Michael Jackson classic. Well, our list doesn't. (Though we do give Thriller its due.) Instead, this week's podcast aims for picking some more unusual tunes. (Okay, and a few obvious ones too.)
