Joe Maddon gnome giveaway returns Aug. 3

Much to the amazement of Joe Maddon himself, his lookalike garden gnome that was a team giveaway at Rays games in April was so popular it was soon selling on eBay for close to $50. So it's no surprise that the Tampa Bay Rays have arranged for a second giveaway of the Maddon gnome, on Aug. 3 when the team plays the San Francisco Giants. The first 10,000 fans arriving at that game will get a gnome, but you might need to line up early to snatch up the heartfelt and creepy tribute. In April, fans started lining up more than an hour before the gates opened. "You always aspire to become a bobblehead, but to become a gnome is even beyond expectations," Maddon said at the time. "That part of it truly is hard to wrap your mind around." — Sharon Kennedy Wynne, Times staff writer
