Lipizzans winter home in Florida awes crowds

MYAKKA CITY - The crowd cheers as the white Lipizzan stallion rears up on it's hind legs with Gabriella Herrmann coaxing a majestic move from one of the horses she trained.

"The Herrmann family has been doing this for generations, it's been passed down," says Herrmann.

Herrmann says one of the famous horses was given to her family 300 years ago. Since the 1960's about 30 of the horses have made their winter home in Florida, dazzling fans with their training shows. During the summer they travel through the north east preforming shows.

A short drive from Tampa Bay, just west of Myakka City, you can see Hermanns Royal Lipizzan Stallions rehearsals on Thursday and Friday afternoons at 3:00 p.m., or Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m.

They ask for a small donation from those that can afford it. The practices are open to the public through the first weekend in May. Call them at 941-322-1501 for a reservation or find them on the web at:

Havana is a photographer's dream. Bright colors abound, from the walls to the classic cars to the streets filled with tourists, musicians and locals. All of these elements are a part of photographs that were so rare for Americans to capture until very recently. I loved photographing this scene in front of this perfect yellow wall.
