Tall ship 'Lynx' returns to St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG — The schooner inspired by the 1812 sailing ship Lynx is back in St. Petersburg.

The Lynx will be in Tampa Bay for a 12-day stay for public tours and student educational excursions at Harborage Marina. The entrance is at the corner of First Street and 13th Avenue SE.

Visitors are invited to board the 122-foot version of the fast, armed privateer Lynx, which helped America in the War of 1812 against the British. Ship tours are $6 for adults and free for children 4 to 12.

The crew of the Lynx wears authentic maritime clothing from the early 1800s. The ship was built to near-exact specifications of the original fast Baltimore schooner design.

Two-hour sailing excursions are $65 for adults and $35 for children 4 to 12. More information is available at privateerlynx.com. For ticket reservations or for more information, call toll-free 1-866-446-5969.

The Lynx, which has been called a sailing history museum, provides hands-on educational tours, historical programs and sailing excursions for students through the nonprofit Lynx Educational Foundation.

In addition to educational programming, charters and tours, the Lynx has previously trained the cast and crew of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and has won numerous awards for maritime and historic instructional-educational programs.

The Lynx will leave St. Petersburg on April 14 and begin a journey around the tip of Florida and northward to join tall ship festivals on the East Coast and Great Lakes in summer.
