New writing group to meet at lykes library

Following the success of its Spring Hill Writing Group, the Hernando County Public Library System is starting a Brooksville Writing Group. The group's first meeting will be from 10 a.m. to noon April 12 at Lykes Memorial Library, 238 Howell Ave. Participants will give and receive constructive feedback on each other's work. Those attending are encouraged to bring some of their work to share and to come ready to discuss the challenges and joys of writing. Knights to host antique appraisal

St. Frances Cabrini Knights of Columbus Council 13209 will host its sixth annual Spring Antique Appraisal Show from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 13 in Xavier Hall at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 5030 Mariner Blvd. Fashioned after the Antiques Roadshow television program, the show will include certified personal property appraiser Dale Smrekar. Only verbal appraisals will be provided. There will be no buying or selling. The cost is $5 per item appraised. Refreshments will be available. For information, call Jack Hauser at (352) 686-9767.

Learn the basics of boating safety

The Coast Guard Auxiliary, 4340 Calienta St., will offer its About Boating Safely class from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. This is a beginner program that covers safe boating practices, the use of safety equipment, navigation and Florida law. Completion satisfies the requirement for the Florida boating safety ID. Construction board has 2 vacant seats

The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from individuals interested in volunteering on the Hernando County Board of Construction and Regulation. There are two vacancies: one for a licensed plumbing contractor with a term through December 2014, and the other for a licensed roofing contractor with a term through December 2016. Applications are available in the county administrator's office, Room 263, Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St., Brooksville.
