The action sports spectacle Nitro Circus Live says motocross rider Josh Sheehan landed a record-breaking triple backflip this week, just before the MTV stunt series kicks off its U.S. tour in Tampa on Tuesday.

The show, with top freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboarding tricksters, was founded by Travis Pastrana — the first to ever land a double backflip in 2006 at the X Games. (Read our interview with Pastrana a video of the feat.

In order to complete the triple backflip, a news release says, Sheehan had to reach a speed of 55 mph on a 200-pound bike as he traveled up a 37-foot-tall takeoff ramp. Once airborne, Sheehan has to reach a height of about 80 feet before landing on the 60-foot tall dirt landing ramp.

"It was an exhilarating ride and to be the first person to ever have done this was definitely a defining moment in my career and a dream come true," Sheehan said in a statement.

Nitro Circus Live kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Amalie Arena, 401 Channelside Drive in Tampa.

Tickets are $39-$300. For details, call (813) 301-2500 or see amaliearena.com.
