Star Wars Day deals, parties because, 'May the Fourth be with you'

What started as an inside joke among Star Wars fans, greeting each other with, "May the Fourth be with you," has turned into a full-fledged Star Wars Day holiday. It's an excuse to have parties and spend money on Star Wars collectibles (like we need a special day for that).

Parties

• The Red Star Rock Bar in Seminole Heights is throwing "the ultimate Star Wars Day party" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with screenings of the series, a themed burlesque performance by Vita DeVoid, face and body painting, a costume contest, live DJ, food trucks and drink specials through 1 a.m. It's free at Red Star Rock Bar, 5210 N Florida Ave., Tampa.

• Starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, MacDinton's Irish Pub St. Petersburg is having a May the Fourth Be With You Trivia contest. "Come to MacDinton's You Must" for trivia, Boba Fett-uccini chef specials and "Lightsaber shots." No cover at 242 First Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

• The Glazer Children's Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa, has been giving kids interstellar activities all week for A Galaxy Far, Far Away, included with admission. Wednesday at noon and 2 p.m. children will learn how astronauts eat on the space shuttle. $15, $12.50 military/seniors, $9.50 children, under 1 free.

• Barnes & Noble stores will host a Star Wars X-Wing event beginning at 7 p.m. Kids can indulge in tabletop gaming using miniature ships for a fast-paced combat game. Visit barnesandnoble.com for store locations.

Shopping

Apple, Google Play, Amazon and XBox all have special sales of Star Wars merch.

Emerald City Comics, the huge comic book store at 4902 113th Ave. N just north of Pinellas Park, is having giveaways and a sale all day and raffling off Star Wars Cantina Box with $50 worth of collectibles inside.

Gamers can find bonuses Wednesday from EA on several of its Star Wars games, including:

Star Wars Battlefront will offer players who log in a free bundle of 4,444 credits. A new Hutt Contract will also be available.

• EA will offer free access to Battlefront on PC in a four-hour trial. You'll be able to grab the game from Origin beginning at 11 a.m. and try it out, but you won't have access to any downloadable content available to enhance features.

Star Wars: The Old Republic players will see rewards doubled through May 10.

• The mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes will offer a 25 percent discount on crystals (the premium in-game currency).

More Star Wars goodies

• Marathoning the movies today? Here's what order you should watch them in.

• Need snacks for your May the Fourth party? We've got that, too.

Here are some of our favorite wearable Star Wars things.

And some of our favorite nonwearable Star Wars merch, too. (DEATH STAR WAFFLE MAKER, PEOPLE.)

• Need to explain the saga to the n00bs in your life? Send them here.

• And just for some fun, watch The Force Awakens cast play "Star Wars or Florida," with headlines from our state and their galaxy.
