Plan your weekend May 12-14: Mother's Day fun, the Weeknd, Fringe Festival, Train Day

Plan your weekend

Call your mom

Mother's Day: Sunday is Mother's Day and if you forgot to buy a gift, give your mother your attention. Several attractions in the area are giving moms free admission this weekend with at least one paid admission by her adoring minions. Among them: Florida Aquarium, the Chihuly Collection of glass art, Dinosaur World, the Museum of Science and Industry and the Lowry Park Zoo. There's many more to be found at Tampabay.com/holiday.

Performance art

Tampa International Fringe Festival: The brand-new event aims to turn revelers into repeat customers for what could turn out to be the most eclectic group performers this area has ever seen. More than 100 performers will put out a range of shows from a play about the Falklands war (Falkland) to a comedy about theme park actors (Callbacks), to a dark comedy punk cabaret singer-songwriter (Mock$tar) and a variety show (Tyler's Time Out). The festival runs today through Sunday at several venues. $5-$13, passes available. "Fringe Central" information hub is New World Brewery, 1313 E Eighth Ave. tampafringe.org.

Music

The Weeknd: Kick off the weekend on Friday with the Weeknd, the sizzling Canadian crooner who made getting high sound sexy on smash singles Can't Feel My Face and The Hills. Opening are Black Beatles hitmakers Rae Sremmurd along with Belly and 6lack. 7:30 p.m. Friday at Amalie Arena, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $35.75 and up. (813) 301-2500. amaliearena.com.

Pops

Florida Orchestara does The American Songbook: With stars and bars Jeff Tyzik conducts this weekend's pops concert, The American Songbook: Then and Now. It's a vehicle made for pianist and singer Tony DeSare, who never met a jazzy standard he didn't love. Concerts start at 8 p.m. Friday at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa; 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mahaffey Theater, 400 First Street S, St. Petersburg; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 N McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $15-$45. (727) 892-3337. floridaorchestra.org.

Comedy

Sebastian Maniscalco: This increasingly in-demand comic brings his second Showtime special, Why Would You do That? on tour. His comedy tends to be full of seething observations on human behavior, like an Italian Jerry Seinfeld. He was featured in the film of Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show and will appear in the movie, The House, starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler. See him at 7 p.m. Friday at the Straz Center's Carol Morsani Hall, 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa. $43.25 and up. (813) 229-7827. strazcenter.org.

Dance

Derek and Julianne Hough: The dynamic duo from Dancing With the Stars are back and so popular Ruth Eckerd Hall has added a matinee show Saturday. Derek was 12 and Julianne was 10 when they left their Salt Lake City home to live with their dance coaches in London. The pair studied jazz, tap, ballroom and gymnastics. Both have gone on to win multiple DWTS competitions. The expanded repeat tour features singing by Julianne, a little Donny-and-Marie comedy sketch about their sibling rivalry, and the Move Company Dancers backing them up in a trip through the four elements and dance styles of the world. 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $38.75 and up. (727) 791-7400. rutheckerdhall.com.

Take the kids

Train Day: Tampa's historic Union Station will have a series of free family-friendly events to mark the anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Amtrak dropped the event this year due to budget cuts, but the Friends of Tampa Union Station volunteers will keep the celebration rolling. There will be train displays from the Florida Railroad Museum and railroad clubs, historic exhibits, live music and food trucks 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 601 N Nebraska Ave., Tampa.
