This week's best bets: Vivica A. Fox and friends, hip-hop violinist Damien Escobar

PULLING STRINGS: Damien Escobar

The streets of Queens were the first stage for Damien Escobar, who at age 9 busked with his brother as the hip-hop violin duo Nuttin' but Stringz. Escobar, a classical music prodigy, graduated from Juilliard at age 13. Before the duo dissolved in 2012, Nuttin' but Stringz made it to the finals of America's Got Talent, played for presidents and toured the world. Escobar, now 30, has said he had a tough transition on his own but eventually took up his instrument again. His covers of songs by Alicia Keys and John Legend went viral. Now touring behind his solo album Boundless, he takes the stage at Clearwater's Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St., at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. (727) 791-7400. atthecap.com.

VARIETY SHOW: Vivica A. Fox and friends

Keeping up her reputation as one of the hardest-working performers in show biz, Vivica A. Fox is headlining a variety show at Tampa's Cuban Club on Friday after she brought Vivica's Black Magic, a reality competition show, to Lifetime this year. The event is billed as part talent search, part ladies' night out with the beefcake dancers of Xplicit Minds. Comedian Chris O'Baby plays host in between performances by RL of platinum-selling group Next, the Full Force Brothers (Ain't My Type of Hype), Alia Davis of the group Allure and the Beat Down Band. For the talent search portion, the winner of the show gets $500 and the opportunity to open for a future show. 8 p.m. Friday. 2010 N Avenida Republica de Cuba, Tampa. $25-$35. (407) 230-4919.

PROSE: Poetry talk

Poets Morgan Parker, top, and Erica Dawson come together at the Oxford Exchange on Sunday for a conversation about their challenges and styles. Parker released her second book, There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyoncé, earlier this year. And Dawson, a University of Tampa professor, released a 2014 collection, The Small Blades Hurt, that Slate called "headlong, stitched-together, strung out over imaginative rhymes. … Many of her poems have the prolonged marvel of Wile E. Coyote running out past the edge of the cliff." It's free to listen in at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at 420 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. (813) 253-0222.
