Christmas cookies: Toffee Bars

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened (no substitutes)

1 egg yolk

1 ½ cups flour

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon vanilla

6 (1.55-ounce) plain Hershey bars, broken into pieces

⅓ cup crushed pecans or walnuts

Mix first five ingredients until smooth. Spread evenly in ungreased 17- by 11-inch baking pan. (Batter will be thin.) Bake at 350 degrees for 18 minutes. Remove from oven and put broken Hershey pieces on top. When the pieces have melted, spread like frosting and then scatter crushed nuts on top.

Yield: Makes 5 to 6 dozen.

Freezeworthy: No.

Times testing note: We substituted 9 ounces of dark chocolate chips for the Hershey bars.

    Bars & Spirits

I've long wondered why viognier isn't a more popular wine. With its seductive floral aromas and luscious fruit flavors, it's one of my favorite whites.
