No grand prize this year for local Pillsbury Bake-Off finalists

Just like everyone who goes to Las Vegas hoping to hit it big, five Pillsbury Bake-Off finalists from the Tampa Bay area took their recipes to the city of big dreams hoping to win the contest's $1 million grand prize.

And, just like (nearly) everyone else, the gamble didn't pay off.

The million-dollar prize in the contest that drew 100 cooks and bakers from across the country went Monday night to Glori Spriggs of Henderson, Nev., for her Loaded Potato Pinwheels recipe.

Local finalists winning an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas this year were Bethany Perry, 39, of Largo; Debbie Reid, 50, of Clearwater; Marie Valdes, 55, of Brandon; and mother-daughter, Anna Zovko, 80, and JoAnne Tucker, 61, both of Tampa.

Are the finalists discouraged? No way.

"We will get it next year," Valdes said. "It will be held in Nashville."

Winning recipes will be published in the Nov. 20 Taste section.

Branch out: Give Sauteed Asparagus in Soy Sauce Glaze a try

Asparagus is by far the favorite vegetable of my family. I can serve nearly 3 pounds of asparagus a couple of times a week to my family of six, and my girls will still argue over who gets the last stalk. I say this not to impress you with the adventu...
