National Doughnut Day is back. Where to get free doughnuts, doughnut beers and more

Believe it or not, Friday is already June 1, which means National Doughnut Day is back with sweet deals.

The day was created to celebrate the Salvation Army’s "Doughnut Lassies," who served the treats to American soldiers on the front lines during World War I. It’s evolved into a day of free treats as well as some charitable efforts. Here’s where to find free doughnuts and more.

FREE DOUGHNUTS

Krispy Kreme: The chain offers each customer a choice of any free doughnut, no purchase required.

Dunkin’ Donuts: With the purchase of any beverage, you get a free doughnut throughout the day.

Edible Arrangements: The chain has launched new Edible Donuts, which are actually made with apples, and you can get a free one on Friday. From Saturday to Wednesday, any size or combo is buy-one-get-one free.

Papa John’s: Get a free order of the pizza chain’s new doughnut holes Friday with any online purchase. Starting Saturday, you can use the promo code DONUT for a free order with a purchase of two pizzas.

Walmart: Get one free glazed doughnut at all stores.

Datz Dough: Get one classic glazed doughnut. The bakery is also hosting a Johnny Cupcakes pop up event starting at 5 p.m. featuring National Donut Day tees and giveaway and raffle prizes. 2602 S MacDill Ave., Tampa.

Little Donut House: Get two free mini donuts with any purchase. 4048 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

The Donut Experiment: Get a free cinnamon sugar doughnut with any purchase. 674 S Gulfview Blvd., Clearwater.

OTHER DEALS

Winn-Dixie and Fresco y Más: Get 50 percent off all doughnuts in the grocery stores’ bakeries. They’re also running a Facebook contest to win free doughnuts for a year for writing about why you love doughnuts.

OTHER EVENTS

Rapp Brewing Company: The brewery has four specialty doughnut beers — strawberry, chocolate frosted banana creme, mixed berry and "lemon-filled" — paired with cake and glazed donuts starting at 3 p.m. Friday. 10930 Endeavor Way, Suite C, Seminole.

3 Daughters Brewing: Craving Donuts will be on-site from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday as the brewery showcases its coffee porter. Also, the Mainstream Boys Homemade Empanadas food truck will be around and there’s live music from Daisy and the Drivers starting at 8 p.m. 222 22nd St. S, St. Petersburg.

Mini Doughnut Factory: The shop is keeping with the Salvation Army roots of the holiday and will "doughnate" a percentage of the day’s proceeds from the original store in Tampa, 2109 S Dale Mabry Highway, and the location in St. Petersburg, 730 Fourth St. N, to the Salvation Army’s Children’s Services programs. Additionally, founders Zezura and Patrick Ruddell will deliver doughnuts to the children and staff at Salvation Army’s Sally’s House and Children’s Village in St. Petersburg.
