Clearwater's Poppa's BBQ makes TripAdvisor list

This week TripAdvisor users ranked best barbecue joints across the country and a little 'cue stand in Clearwater slipped in at No. 9. Mike DeWeese, owner of Poppa's BBQ, got a call Thursday from his daughter, Sarah Hosford. Had he seen the report from Fox News on TripAdvisor's ranking? He had not. By 2 p.m. Friday he was out of ribs, chicken, pulled pork and everything else that emanates from the pit barbecue. "I wish someone had told me what was going on," said the former electronics expert who was born and raised in Memphis. It's those Memphis roots that may have tipped him into the big time: Memphis-style dry rubs, everything cooked over curling wood smoke. Closed on the weekend, he will use the time to restock in anticipation of next week's TripAdvisor hordes. Poppa's is at 12211 49th St. N, Clearwater.
