Cookie dough isn't just for pints of ice cream any more.

A number of joints featuring cookie dough have opened in the Tampa Bay area recently – including one today.

A Metropolitan Ministries enterprise called Dough Nation opened this morning at 505 N Tampa St, Tampa. It will be open until 10 p.m., so there's plenty of time for you to make it there for your Friday fix.

Making it even sweeter: All proceeds from your purchase go directly to feed the hungry in Tampa Bay – thus the clever name.

Dough Nation also will serve as a training platform for the students of the Metropolitan Ministries culinary program transitioning out of homelessness.

Tampa Bay's new affinity for cookie dough joins a nationwide trend. In New York City, for instance, long lines are a constant at a cookie dough place called Do, and online dough providers also are popular.

Meanwhile, if things in three mark a trend, Tampa Bay's cookie dough scene has arrived.

This summer, The Happy Dough opened at the Tampa Premium Outlets, 2300 Grand Cypress Drive, in Lutz.

And Yogurtology, a family-owned and -operated company headquartered in Tampa, now has a cookie dough frozen yogurt sandwich.

  5. Fresh figs take a starring role in this fig cake

    Figs are showy fruit.

They can't help themselves. Even the plainest, drabbest fig will reveal a scarlet belly, flecked with shimmering seeds, once you take a bite. Whether they're sliced or halved, arranged in a tart shell, on a crostini or just on a plate, there are few visions more enticing. This is why most fig …

Chopping fresh figs and folding them into cake batter is not something you usually see, but that’s exactly what happens in this recipe for fig cake.
