Get ready to freak out. National Ice Cream Day is coming.

RECOMMENDED READING

One of our editors came dashing over to Features the other day. I feared some major news had broken, a celebrity had shuffled off this mortal coil or a Kardashian had married a QR code while I'd glanced away.

But, no. It was National Fried Chicken Day.

Of course, it was imperative that we inform readers of places to get the best crispy bird, and STAT. Another editor turned around in her chair and reminded us that, when she'd told us National Piña Colada Day was coming, we had ignored her.

Food critic Laura Reiley looked up from her desk. She could get to the fried chicken story, just as soon as she finished writing about National Ice Cream Day, which is coming up on Sunday. President Ronald Reagan declared that one with a proclamation in 1984, calling the sweet treat a "nutritious and wholesome food." Sure! For more info on National Ice Cream Day, along with the interesting history of ice cubes and some places to get your scoop on, click here.

We're no stranger to the existence of food holidays around here. But, crusty skeptics that we are, we've written stories about how many are bogus inventions made up by creative bloggers or corporations looking to drive sales. Our writer Christopher Spata even invented his own food holiday last year. National Cuban Sandwich Day actually kind of caught on for a second.

Still, no matter how much the logical, fact-based side of your brain wants to ignore these days because you know they're not real, sometimes we just have to accept that reality is a construct and we're all just living in the Matrix. And while we're here, we would like a deal on some delicious fried chicken.

Why fight it? Instead, be prepared. Here are some upcoming food holidays, according to the robust food holiday blog Foodimentary.com. Please plan your upcoming menus accordingly. I know we will.

THURSday: National French Fry Day

Friday: National Grand Marnier Day

Saturday: National Tapioca Pudding Day and National Gummy Worm Day

Sunday: National Ice Cream Day and National Corn Fritter Day

Monday: National Peach Ice Cream Day (couldn't get along with regular Ice Cream Day?)

Tuesday: National Caviar Day

JULY 19: National Daiquiri Day and National Hot Dog Day

July 20: National Ice Cream Sundae Day, National Lollipop Day and Fortune Cookie Day

July 21: National Junk Food Day. Pretty much sums up every day, doesn't it?
