Bar review: Brewburgers Taphouse in Kenneth City

If the tap handle for 3 Daughters IPA is labeled 30MPH IPA, you know youíre in Kenneth City. You also know youíre at Brewburgers Taphouse, because Brewburgers is the only game in town when it comes to craft beer.

After all, Kenneth City, a small town in Pinellas County of about 5,000 residents, is known primarily for being a city-sized speed trap. But itís information worth knowing, since the nearest competition is all the way over in the Tyrone area, courtesy of CD Roma and the Brass Tap at Tyrone Square mall.

Brewburgers is a burger draw first, especially on $2 burger days. But it keeps a whopping 24 beers on tap, making it well worth a visit.

Brewburgers is a simple operation, a neighborhood bar and grill where youíll probably get on a first-name basis with the staff after a visit or two, and where you might stop in on your way home from work for a cheap dinner and a cold brew.

Thereís a surprising selection of local and other domestic craft options, from Motorworksí medal-winning V-Twin Vienna lager and Hidden Springsí Pretty in Pink raspberry-lemon gose, to Founders Breakfast Stout ó a draft treat in any bar.

As an honest, working-class kind of spot, Brewburgers also keeps it easy on the wallet, with no beers exceeding $5.61. Why $5.61, I donít know, but itís hard to argue with. There are also a couple of house wines.

The interior is basic but friendly, with booths against green walls, laminate floors and a black ceiling with exposed ducts. Thereís a nice collection of board and card games to work with, and TVs here and there. Floor to ceiling windows on the entrance side bring in plenty of natural light, and thereís cafe seating out front, too.

Back to the beer. I noticed that there are quite a few discrepancies between whatís on the chalkboard and whatís actually on the tap handles, the handles being more accurate. This is mildly frustrating, but it could also be interpreted as a positive sign, implying a decent amount of tap handle turnover.

There are some less-ubiquitous taps, too, such as Mo Say It pale ale and Weeki Weisse blackberry Berliner from Spring Hillís Marker 48 Brewing. Locals from Green Bench, Coppertail, TBBC, Hidden Springs and 3 Daughters mingle with South Florida brews from Funky Buddha and Islamorada.

Permanent taps include Angry Orchard cider, Goose Island 312 wheat ale, Stella Artois, Magic Hat #9, AmberBock, Bud Light and Miller Lite. The mix is reflective of Brewburgerís overall vibe: a neighborhood joint with a little bit of something for everyone, Bud drinkers and Brehit akfast Stout drinkers alike. It may be Kenneth Cityís only good beer option, but a friendly neighborhood bar with a good selection can do business anywhere.
