The past six months have been kind to Dunedin’s 7venth Sun Brewery. In August, the brewery’s long-awaited Tampa expansion finally happened, with its much larger Seminole Heights facility and tasting room opening in a town eager to try its range of ultra-fresh IPAs and exotic, foeder-fermented brews.
This month, both 7venth Sun locations celebrated the brewery’s sixth year in business with a slew of special and new releases, including a quirky IPA brewed with Citra hops and flavored with strawberries: Electric Wizard.
Electric Wizard is conspicuously upbeat for a beer named after an English doom metal band, pouring with intense citrus, tropical fruit and berry aromas trapped in a dense pectin haze.
The addition of strawberry is somewhat misleading. Most strawberry beers are all about the strawberry, in a liquid shortcake kind of way. Electric Wizard treats the fruit addition as another layer, in the same way that various fruity flavors are derived from the Citra hops alongside a crisp bitterness.
In other words: it doesn’t taste like an IPA with fruit extract added. Instead, it tastes fresh and extremely fruity, with a layer of extra depth that hops alone couldn’t achieve. The strawberry flavors become more pronounced as the beer warms, but they remain subtle to the end.
7venth Sun has in no small part built its reputation on explosively flavored IPAs, and Electric Wizard continues the tradition into 7venth Sun’s sixth year. Find it in canned four-packs at either of the brewery’s locations (1012 E Broadway Ave., Dunedin; 6809 N Nebraska Ave., Tampa) for $12. Suggested album pairing: Dopethrone from the other Electric Wizard.
