Local craft beer of the week: Ms. Pacman Blonde Ale, Right Around the Corner Arcade Brewery

For Tampa Bay Beer Week, St. Petersburg’s Right Around the Corner is doing one better than hosting a few special beer releases: It’s debuting its own new line of house brews, featuring a new beer for each day of Beer Week: eight beers in eight days.

While many of these releases are in such limited quantity that they’ll be gone by the time you read this (RIP, Roasty Roasty Coconut Coffee porter), the brewery’s flagship, Ms. Pacman blonde ale, will be on tap the full week and beyond.

Ms. Pacman is a blonde in name only. Brewed with a fair amount of Vienna malt, it pours copper, and at 6.2 percent alcohol by volume, it’s also heftier than your typical blonde. Saaz hops add a mild hop spice, but the emphasis remains on smooth, lightly sweet malt notes, in a beer that’s both substantial and refreshing. Its slightly off-kilter execution works well with the bar’s — and now brewery’s — quirky, nostalgia-laden interior (check out those NES Zapper tap handles!).

While Ms. Pacman is a solid go-to, don’t miss out on RATC Arcade Brewery’s other limited offerings. Ten84, a collaboration with upcoming Tampa brewery Bay Cannon Brewing, infuses a dry, tart saison base with mango-flavored green tea; I’m Bob is an excellent SMaSH beer made with pilsner malt and Simcoe hops; and French Toast is a rich and sweet porter brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks and maple syrup.

Flavored variants of RATC Arcade’s core brews will also be a regular feature: there’s now a strawberry-flavored Ms. Pacman.

RATC Arcade Brewery’s grand opening is next month, but there’s still plenty of time to preview its specialty beers during the remainder of Tampa Bay Beer Week. Check the bar’s Facebook page for a full beer release schedule.

Drunk in love with banana bread

Drunk in love with banana bread

I have a thing about bananas. They have to be perfectly yellow, with a light hint of green. And they absolutely cannot have a spot of brown on them. At all. Brown bananas make me gag. My window of tasty opportunity is small, so I love to bake with ov...

Raw meat terrifies me. Growing up, I was the kid who avoided cookie dough because it could give me salmonella poisoning. Just imagine how I feel about a slab of bloody steak. So for my latest cooking challenge, I’m diving into the deep end and making...
