Taste test: gluten-free brownies

Without getting into a debate about who should follow a gluten-free diet, we know it is necessary for people with celiac disease and other similar digestive issues. When a friend served gluten-free brownies at a recent girls' night, I was shocked that I couldn't tell the difference between her batch and my decadent brownies. Our tasters had a similar reaction when we sampled eight brands of boxed, gluten-free brownies. For starters, we had no trouble finding plenty of gluten-free mixes, an obvious sign of the growing market for such products. We prepared each batch according to package directions.
