BROOKSVILLE — Families with young children in tow, carrying blankets, chairs and small coolers for a day at the park.
For some, that image conjures up a simpler time. A time when communities could gather for fun — without spending a lot of money or taking a long trip.
Families can experience that pleasure Saturday when the Brooksville Parks and Recreation Department hosts its Movie in the Park event at Tom Varn Park.
"It's wonderful to see the people walking into the park," said parks and recreation director Mike Walker, "especially families with young children."
The free event, held in conjunction with the nonprofit group Friends of the Children, took a hiatus during the holidays and the cooler months. In addition to Saturday's movie, Walker said funding has been approved for two more events that will be held in the coming months.
Movies in the Park has drawn crowds of about 300 families, Walker said.
A large screen will be set up on the front softball field, down the right field foul line. There will be concessions, with kettle corn, snow cones, hot dogs and drinks available.
Showing will be the animated film Hotel Transylvania, rated PG, which features the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James and a number of Sandler's friends and former Saturday Night Live cast members, including Molly Shannon, David Spade and John Lovitz.
The story should entertain all ages. Dracula builds a resort where he can raise his daughter in a safe environment, free of humans. That is, until a human boy unwittingly discovers the resort and becomes smitten with the count's teenage offspring.
Those attending are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs, sit in the grass and watch the film, which will begin about dusk.
"It's exciting to be able to offer this," Walker said. "These big community family events can make a positive impact."
