'12 Years A Slave,' 'Nebraska' lead Spirit Award nominations

12 Years a Slave led all movies with seven nominations when the 29th annual Film Independent Spirit Award finalists were announced Tuesday. Alexander Payne's drama Nebraska was second with six nominations, including a best actor nod for Bruce Dern.

The Spirit Awards, a key indicator of possible Academy Award nominations, will be presented March 1, 2014 — one day before the Oscars — at a rollicking luncheon on Santa Monica beach, broadcast at 10 p.m. on the IFC channel. Comedian Patton Oswalt is this year's host.

In addition to 12 Years a Slave and Nebraska, the best feature finalists include All is Lost, Frances Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis. Nebraska is slated to open in Tampa Bay theaters on Dec. 13; Inside Llewyn Davis is now expected in January. — Steve Persall, Times movie critic
