'12 Years a Slave' tops Southeastern Film Critics Association awards

Steve McQueen's historical epic 12 Years a Slave garnered five awards Monday from the Southeastern Film Critics Association, including best picture, director, actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), supporting actress (Lupita N'yongo) and John Ridley's adapted screenplay. No other 2013 releases received multiple awards. Demonstrating its dominance in the balloting, 12 Years a Slave finished second in three other categories. American Hustle's cast, led by Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, was named the year's best ensemble. Other winners included best actress Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), and Jared Leto of Dallas Buyers Club as best supporting actor. The organization composed of 51 critics across nine states — including the Times' Steve Persall — also cited Spike Jonze's Her (original screenplay), Disney's Frozen (animated film), and Gravity (cinematography). Balloting also began Monday for the Florida Film Critics Circle, with results expected to be announced Tuesday. — Steve Persall, Times movie critic
