Bollywood's 'Bewakoofiyaan' opens in Tampa

It may look intimidating, but don't let the long title fool you. Bewakoofiyaan really just means foolishness.

These particular fools are Mohit and Mayera, two young upper middle-class corporate types who want to get married and think they can lie to Mayera's disapproving father to achieve that end. Because convincing him you still have a job is so much less work than actually finding another job. There have been whispers that the movie is loosely based on Guess Who (you know, the one with Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher), but without the racial underpinnings.

The movie stars Sonam Kapoor, daughter of actor Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire), who has been around Tampa touting the April 23-26 International Indian Film Academy Awards, and Ayushmann Khurrana, who won the IIFA Award for best male debut last year in Vicky Donor. Mayera's father is played by Rishi Kapoor — no relation to Sonam, but he's a member of the Kapoors, Bollywood's equivalent of the Kennedys. Recent villainous roles earned him two nominations for IIFA's best performance in a negative role (a.k.a. best villain) award this year.

Director Nupur Asthana's first film, Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, about a young Facebook romance gone awry, was a surprise hit with new actors. So you can hope she can do the same with two more experienced fools.

Bewakoofiyaan, with subtitles, opens Friday at AMC Veterans 24 in Tampa.
