'Dolphin Tale 2' adds inspiring surfer Bethany Hamilton to cast

Winter the tailless bottlenose has a new co-star for Dolphin Tale 2, currently filming in Clearwater. The production announced Monday that professional surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her left arm in a 2003 shark attack, is filming scenes for the sequel at Clearwater Marine Aquarium where Winter resides. Hamilton's recovery and return to competition inspired the 2011 movie Soul Surfer starring AnnaSophia Robb, a series of eight inspirational books and a faith-based documentary. Her story nicely synchs with Winter's appeal for physically challenged aquarium visitors, who consider the dolphin with her prosthetic tail a role model for overcoming the odds. Hamilton, 23, plays herself in Dolphin Tale 2, apparently sharing screen time with Winter and child stars Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff, since headliners Harry Connick Jr., Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd aren't scheduled to arrive on the set for several weeks. Filming continues in Pinellas County through January, with breaks for the holidays. Dolphin Tale 2, written and directed by Charles Martin Smith, is slated for release by Warner Bros. on Sept. 19, 2014. — Steve Persall, Times movie critic
