The final trailer for Dolphin Tale 2, continuing the adventures of Winter the tailless dolphin, was previewed for the media Thursday at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the sequel's primary filming location.
Our movie critic's review: The trailer is two and a half minutes of adorable inspiration, a calling card for Tampa Bay tourism, and at least one key plot point revealed.
Like the 2011 original, Dolphin Tale 2 is based on a true-life dolphin rescue, this time a bottlenose calf named Hope, whom Winter took under her fin as a mentor.
The trailer shows a fictional subtext with writer-director Charles Martin Smith portraying a wildlife official issuing an order to find sickly Winter a companion within 30 days, or else. (The "or else" isn't described — but whatever it is, you know Harry Connick Jr. and Morgan Freeman won't allow it to happen.)
The trailer also suggests a larger role for Rufus the mischievous pelican, who aquarium CEO David Yates said was the second-favorite critter of the original's fans, after Winter herself.
Dolphin Tale 2 opens nationwide on Sept. 19. The trailer will be shown before How to Train Your Dragon 2 this weekend, and will be posted online Friday evening.
