Local artists' photos selected for Ron Howard film contest

Photographs snapped by local artists Dave Ballis and J.W. Hendricks have been selected as winners in the 10th annual Project Imagination contest helmed by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard and his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard.

Ballis of Pinellas Park and Hendricks, a Seminole resident, each receive $5,000 for their photographs. Three years ago, Lexia Frank of Wesley Chapel was a Project Imagination winner.

The contest, sponsored by Canon, calls for celebrities to direct short films inspired by 10 photographs selected from thousands of entries. This year's guest filmmakers include Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, actor Eva Longoria, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, LCD Soundsystem founder James Murphy and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. The shorts will be presented at the Project Imagination Film Festival in New York later this year.

In addition to the five celebrity short films, the Howards and other judges will select five shorts inspired by the photographs and produced by regular people for inclusion in the festival. The deadline for entry is July 23. Information is available at imagination.usa.canon.com.
