National Board of Review picks 'Her' as best movie

From the looks of Wednesday's National Board of Review balloting, this is a wide open movie awards season. Not one of the organization's picks in major categories matched the New York Film Critics Circle winners announced a day earlier. The National Board of Review selected Spike Jonze's cyber-romance Her as 2013's best film and director, and Nebraska co-stars Bruce Dern and Will Forte as best lead and supporting actors. Emma Thompson was voted best actress for Saving Mr. Banks, while Octavia Spencer took supporting honors for Fruitvale Station. Screenplay prizes went to Inside Llewyn Davis (original) and The Wolf of Wall Street (adapted). Each of those movies made the group's list of top films, along with 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, Lone Survivor, Prisoners, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. — Steve Persall, Times movie critic
