New movies this week

Oblivion

The gist: Watch Tom Cruise in a futuristic thriller about a man stuck in a desolate wilderness, about to find out a secret that will destroy the illusion of everything he knows. In this case, it was Katie Holmes leaving him and taking their daughter Suri with her while he was out filming this movie — just before he turned 50, too. PG-13

The cast: Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo.

The buzz: Does Oblivion describe the fate of Earth, Cruise's character or the storytelling? "All the eye candy in the world can't mask the sensation that you've seen this all before … and done better," Entertainment Weekly says. "Too bad the movie's script wasn't given the same attention as its sleek, brave-new-world look."
