New movie this week
The gist: Because it's Oscar weekend, Hollywood has decided most everyone else will be glued to their TV sets and doing nothing but thinking about how awesome L.A. is this whole weekend. No one would possibly want to see a new movie, except maybe the slack-jawed yokels who would appreciate a movie with The Rock playing a tough-guy dad who helps the DEA take down a drug kingpin to keep his wayward son out of jail. Yeah, that really does sound like an audience that would skip the Oscars. We bet it makes millions. PG-13
The cast: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Barry Pepper, Jon Bernthal, Rafi Gavron and Susan Sarandon.
The buzz: Like most movies with The Rock, it's pretty mediocre, but the star's charisma is undeniable, and it's crafted well enough to reach a particular crowd. There are worse ways to blow $10. "Designed to make empathetic citizens question the system, this strangely compelling issue pic plays less to auds' hearts than to their craving for testosterone," Variety says.
