See James Franco's 'Interior. Leather Bar.' at gay film festival

Back in 1980, the movie Cruising was a cause celebre, starring Al Pacino as a detective going undercover in New York's gay S&M scene to capture a serial killer. The busiest man in show biz, James Franco, examines the making of Cruising in Interior. Leather Bar., showing 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Muvico Centro Ybor, sponsored by the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Oscar-winning director William Friedkin was forced to excise nearly 40 minutes of sexually explicit material from Cruising to avoid an X rating (now NC-17) from the MPAA. Franco and co-director Travis Mathews speculate about that footage and behind the scenes with artists experimenting to the creative extreme. Tickets are $10, available at the box office and online at — Steve Persall, Times movie critic
