Things To Do

Tampa Theatre showing Oscar short films

Looking to gain an advantage in your Academy Awards office pool? Tampa Theatre is offering the chance to see every nominee in two obscure Oscar categories that often trip up predictions. Starting today for one week (except Feb. 17 when a special event is scheduled), the historic movie palace will screen the animated and live action short film finalists in separate, alternating showcases. Highlights include Death of a Shadow, a live action steampunk sci-fi romance, and the delightful 'toons Paperman and Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare. Visit tampatheatre.org or call (813) 274-8981 for dates and times of the showcases. Tickets are $10 with discounts available to Tampa Theatre members, seniors and military personnel. Now all we need are screenings of those documentary short nominees and winning the Oscar pool will be a breeze. — Steve Persall, Times movie critic
