Things To Do

What new movies are out this week: 'Atomic Blonde,' 'The Emoji Movie'

OPENING FRIDAY:

ATOMIC BLONDE

The world's baddest Academy Award winner Charlize Theron kicks Cold War butt in Atomic Blonde (R), in a role more furious (and Furiosa) than ever. It won't win Theron another Oscar but maybe an MMA title shot.

Theron, above, plays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton, a sexy/deadly spy assigned to extract a vital dossier from behind the Berlin Wall. Assisted by an embedded fellow agent (James McAvoy), Lorraine will stop at nothing except a sensual interlude or two with a French spy (Sofia Boutella). Ooh la la.

Atomic Blonde is David Leitch's first directing credit after dozens of stunt man gigs and before he tackles Deadpool 2. Trailers suggest Leitch has that sort of savagely fun escapism in mind.

THE EMOJI MOVIE

Patrick Stewart lends his sonorous voice to poop. What else about The Emoji Movie (PG) do you need to know?

Maybe that The Emoji Movie is a rare animated comedy not offered for review. Not that it would matter, but some display of confidence would be nice.

The Emoji Movie takes place inside your cellphone, which should be turned off at all times during shows. T.J. Miller's Silicon Valley departure sounds shaky as the voice of Gene, above, who unlike every other emoji has more than one personality. Stewart's poop joins James Corden, Anna Faris and Christina Aguilera in the cast.

One more caveat: Director Tony Leondis' only feature was 2008's misplayed hunchback Igor. (John Cusack, we forgive you.)

in theaters: our Top 5

Current movies recommended by the Tampa Bay Times:

1 Dunkirk: Christopher Nolan's masterpiece, right, will be chased all awards season.

2 War for the Planet of the Apes: Wraps up one of the best movie trilogies ever.

3 The Big Sick: A charmer redefining what romantic comedy means.

4 Baby Driver: The most shoot-em-up fun at the movies this weekend.

5 Spider-Man: Homecoming: Tom Holland is the geek-chic Spidey we've been waiting for.
