Bieber's DUI arrest offers cathartic twist: He got caught

Finally, the Biebs got caught.

After a tabloid-tizzying spree of allegedly spitting on fans, egging houses, urinating in restaurant mop buckets and demeaning U.S. presidents — and always getting away with everything — it's different this time for 19-year-old pop star Justin Bieber.

Early Thursday, he was charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest and driving without a valid license after a 4 a.m. drag race — in a yellow Lamborghini, no less — through Miami Beach.

According to Miami Beach police Chief Raymond Martinez, Bieber "made some statements that he had consumed some alcohol and that he had been smoking marijuana and consumed some prescription medication." He also let loose a string of F-bombs at police, according to the police report.

Despite the thoroughly boneheaded things the Canadian star, whose net worth is about $130 million, has done, this latest episode of Bieber Acting Badly got serious.

Handcuffs. Mugshots. Bail.

Boyfriend got caught.

Finally.

The news of Bieber's arrest provides a pop-cultural catharsis that has sent the Internet into a frenzy of huzzahs and about-times. After all, when we Non-Biebers get out of control, we routinely pay the consequences. Even Lindsay Lohan had to be verbally shamed by Oprah before she (hopefully) tamed her Hollywood hijinks.

When Bieber's Miami mugshot was released — showing wild hair and a dumb smile — it felt like a strange, figurative climax to his saga, a kid who went from the Tiger Beat charm of 2010 hit Baby to someone who cared so little about his image he was recently photographed partying in a Brazilian brothel.

The DUI drag-racing headline comes on top of frequent allegations of speeding through his Calabasas, Calif., neighborhood, even getting into a tiff with neighbor, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Keyshawn Johnson.

The most recent Justin-sized mess involves Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies using a search warrant last week to raid his mansion in a felony vandalism investigation. They seized Bieber's iPhone and security camera system, which have been examined for clues about whether Bieber tossed eggs over a fence that splattered onto the neighboring house, causing an estimated $20,000 in damage.

That's bad; a DUI is worse. The 4 a.m. traffic stop was for drag racing in a tree-lined residential district where he was going 50 to 60 mph in a 30 mph zone, police say. According to gossip site TMZ, Bieber had a passenger in the car, Chantel Jeffries, a model who has dated multiple celebrities. Also arrested was 19-year-old R&B singer Khalil Sharieff, also on a drunken driving charge. He reportedly was racing in a red Ferrari.

Members of the musician's entourage had apparently used their cars to block traffic for the race. According to the arrest report, Bieber "had slow deliberate movements" and appeared to be in a stupor when the officer ordered him to exit his vehicle. Bieber was arrested after repeatedly refusing to put his hands on his vehicle so the officer could pat him down to look for weapons, the report said.

The report also says he cursed several times at the officer and demanded to know why he was being arrested. At one point, Bieber said: "What the f--- did I do, why did you stop me?"

Bieber failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the Miami Beach police station for a Breathalyzer, police said. Results haven't been released.

Although Bieber boasts 48.9 million Twitter followers, his superheroic ability to find trouble and negative press is obviously taking a toll. His new songs have failed to chart high; his latest movie, Believe, was one of the biggest financial bombs of 2013.

After about 8 hours, Bieber was released from jail on $2,500 bail. He then sat on the top of a black Cadillac Escalade, where he waved to a throng of screaming fans, who, much like Bieber himself, don't seem to care about what he does.

They might want to enjoy Bieber while they can, however. According to ABC News, the DUI arrest, coupled with the felony vandalism investigation, could be enough for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to make a case to send Bieber back to Canada.

Bieber by the numbers

• Justin Bieber has a net worth of $130 million, according

to celebritynetworth.com. Last year alone, he made about

$58 million, according to Forbes.

• He was only 15 when his platinum-selling debut My World was released. The singer from Ontario had placed second in a local singing contest two years earlier and began posting performances on YouTube. The videos caught the attention of a talent agent who helped Bieber land an audition with R&B singer Usher. Usher, along with Island/Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid, then signed him to a recording contract.

• He has 48.9 million Twitter followers, No. 2 behind Katy Perry's 49.7 million.

• Bieber was driving a 2013 Lamborghini Gallardo. Khalil Sharieff was behind the wheel of a 2009 Ferrari 16M. Both cars, worth about $260,000 each, were rented from the Miami exotic car rental company Lou La Vie. The cars generally rent for $1,200 to $1,800 per day.

More trouble

The arrest caps a highly visible week for Bieber in South Florida, where he was reported to have blown tens of thousands of dollars at the King of Diamonds strip club.

The Opa-locka Police Department has also said it is investigating officers who gave Bieber and his crew an unauthorized escort through traffic after he landed at Opa-locka Executive Airport.

Two officers have been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, sources say.
