Clarinet phenom joins Florida Orchestra for Benny Goodman tribute

Some 20 years ago, 10-year-old Dave Bennett began playing a clarinet he got from his grandparents. Grandpa also gave the boy a tape of Benny Goodman songs, and in no time Bennett learned them by ear. Now at the ripe age of 29, Bennett is considered the foremost interpreter of Goodman, and he and his sextet will join the Florida Orchestra in a pops concert tribute to the great "King of Swing." Expect classics such as Let's Dance, Bugle Call Rag, I Got Rhythm, And the Angels Sing, Blues in the Night, Goody Goody, Sing Sing Sing and Stompin' at the Savoy. Concerts are 8 p.m. Friday at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. (727) 892-3337 or toll-free 1-800-662-7286.
