Legendary jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham works out a musical arrangement with guitarist Dean Brown on Thursday at the Palladium in St. Petersburg. Cobham and the Spectrum 40 band turned their rehearsal for tonight’s show at the Palladium into a free, 90-minute master class for rhythm section students from St. Petersburg College, the University of South Florida and local high schools. Students watched during the first hour, then for the last 30 minutes the musicians answered questions. The master workshop was provided by the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts and St. Petersburg College’s Music Industry/Recording Arts program.

The students watched during the first hour, then for the last 30 minutes the musicians took questions from the audience.

The master workshop is provided by the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts and St. Petersburg College's Music Industry/Recording Arts to St. Petersburg College students and high school band students.

Cobham invited students to attend the rehearsal as listeners in much the same way that students in a conducting class would sit in to watch a master conductor rehearsing the music of Brahms or Beethoven before a concert.

Cobham's show is at 8 p.m. today at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg.
