Legendary jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham and the Spectrum 40 band turned their Palladium rehearsal into a free 90-minute master class Thursday for rhythm section students from St. Petersburg College, the University of South Florida and local high schools.
The students watched during the first hour, then for the last 30 minutes the musicians took questions from the audience.
The master workshop is provided by the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts and St. Petersburg College's Music Industry/Recording Arts to St. Petersburg College students and high school band students.
Cobham invited students to attend the rehearsal as listeners in much the same way that students in a conducting class would sit in to watch a master conductor rehearsing the music of Brahms or Beethoven before a concert.
Cobham's show is at 8 p.m. today at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg.
