Sarasota Orchestra debuts new music director

This weekend is the debut of the Sarasota Orchestra's new music director, Estonian conductor Anu Tali. She will conduct Estonian composer Heino Eller's Dawn, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (you'll recognize it from the movie Somewhere in Time) and Dvořák's Symphony No. 7 at 8 tonight at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota [$30-$84; toll-free 1-800-826-9303.]. Sunday's performance is sold out. Tali trained at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory in Russia and, in 1997, co-founded the Nordic Symphony Orchestra with her twin sister, Kadri. Tali is Sarasota's fifth music director, succeeding Leif Bjaland, who held the post for 15 years and stepped down in 2012. – Kelly Smith, Times staff writer
