There's no Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars or Pharrell Williams atop the lineup for this year's 93.3-FLZ Jingle Ball. No one jaw-dropping star with enough cross-generational appeal to help make it the top pop show of the winter.
And you know what? That won't matter one bit.
This year's younger-skewing Jingle Ball lineup was announced on Monday, and it features a host of tween and 20-something superstars who on Dec. 19 will once again turn Tampa's Amalie Arena into a shrieking bowl of candy-colored confetti.
Topping the bill are Australian boy-rock sensations 5 Seconds of Summer; powerhouse pop singer Demi Lovato; chart-topping DJ and producer Zedd and tween idol-turned-pinup Nick Jonas.
Also on the bill are singers who scored two of the biggest hits of the summer, Tove Lo (Talking Body) and Charlie Puth (See You Again); current Taylor Swift tourmate Shawn Mendes; Oscar nominated actress-turned-pop singer Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit); and up-and-comers R. City, Conrad Sewell, Alessia Cara and DNCE.
Tickets to this year's Jingle Ball start at $44.25 and go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Oct. 12 at iheartradio.com/jingleball. Limited pre-sale tickets will be available to Capital One cardholders from 10 a.m. Oct. 6 through 10 a.m. Oct. 9.
Aside from 5 Seconds of Summer — who sold out Tampa's MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre in September — the lineup should feel familiar to 93.3-FLZ listeners. It'll be the third Jingle Ball for Demi Lovato and the second for Zedd, Jonas and Mendes.
But in its sixth year, the Jingle Ball has become such a slickly managed and orchestrated machine that the iHeartMedia empire, which controls 93.3-FLZ, could trot out just about anyone and count on a gigantic audience. Last year's Jingle Ball, featuring Lovato closing the show, drew a sold-out crowd of 14,480.
Tampa is one of 10 major markets getting a Jingle Ball this year. The others are Dallas, San Francisco/Oakland, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Chicago and Miami/Fort Lauderdale. Tampa's event is the final stop on the tour.
For the fourth straight year, the Jingle Ball will feature a free pre-show on the plaza outside Amalie Arena, but the lineup has not yet been decided.
